Huh. Looked like the rims weren't my cup of tea based on the initial pics, but they really work on the car. Nice job!

After dealing with a couple years of mystery EPC lights, my car is finally fixed. Since I work at a dealer and will routinely poke and prod, I knew something was up and I wasn't going to continue throwing parts at it.
My car had a chain tensioner failure before I owned it. Head off, valve out replacements etc. The car ran and drove completely fine but showed no symptoms of anything, yet would throw random EPC lights when making boost and not driving like a lunatic.
I began to notice a new volume of chain slap during hot idle, enough that you could feel it through the timing case.
As it turns out, the replacement tensioner was still the old revision and was in the process of failing again. Not only that, as a result of the chain stretching, the VVT cam phaser was adjusting out of range and becoming "loose".
Fortunately (somewhat) for me, there's a class-action lawsuit involving certain VINs, which results in an extended warranty including some amount of consequential parts.

So new chains, new guides, new timing case, and a new cam!

Honestly, the car drove mint before other than the sporadic light. But having all that shit replaced and driving it now, it's amazing how much of a difference there is.

    the jalopy for reference:

It's stock for power, mainly because clutch & downpipe is mad dollas.
Just intake, res delete, all engine/trans mounts, springs & spacers.

    B3 or B4?

I can't recall if the VWs sold in the US in the 90s were already built in the US or Mexico back then or imported. Or if that was model specific. Because early 90s VW in my memory and experience (friend had a second gen Jetta) were tough as fuck.

It's a general issue with a specific line of engines with timing chains.
    They're shite.

The vast majority of vw engines has timing belts.

Oh those, yeah fuck those. Same as late 90s/early 2000s unit injector TDIs, my dad had a block or two crap on him (not that he cared that much with company cars).

16v or g60? Both weren't very reliable in North America. G chargers blowing up with high boost or milieage, and CIS/Tbelt failures on the 16v. Or maybe door handles freezing/breaking :P
Euro got the NICE 16 valve :*(

Corrados & B3/4 Passats were imported, early MK2 were imported and late Mexico built for North America. NAR MK3 after 93/4 were Mexico made.

My mk3's were all pretty solid, as was my mk2.

Just about every North American VW after 2009 is timing chain nowadays, barring the diesels I4s and the 1.4 engines.
I suppose chain driven VVT systems are cheaper to make or more robust than running a tbelt AND a chain with a solenoid.

Granted, I don't think too many FSI engines blew up because of failed belts. Moreso high-pressure fuel pump cam followers disintegrating and eating cams, or intermediate shaft/oil pump failure.

I think the ABF and old 12v VR were the most reliable VW gassers they made :P

No idea. All I remember is that it was the GLX trim, a VR6 engine, and a manual. And yes, the interior door handles broke twice. And the car horn randomly went off in the middle of the night. And the security system would not operate correctly. And the power windows, and the engine, etc. etc.

That's too bad, typically the VR was pretty solid minus needing a coilpack every 100k or so.
Sounds like it had some water intrusion tho :P

This Volvo V40 Cross Country T5 AWD is now our daily driver after upgrading from a V50 D3 this weekend.

I'm surprised how rare these turned out to be, only 188 in total in the UK.

This one has the 4 cylinder 2 litre 245bhp engine and not the old 5 cylinder 2.5 litre 254bhp engine from Ford.

It is one of modern days great mysteries why it wasn't renamed T4 but I guess they kept it from a marketing point of view.

the 2.5 5 cylinder was not a ford design, it was a development of Volvo's inhouse VME's that Ford used elsewhere.
    Viking, n.:
    1. Daring Scandinavian seafarers, explorers, adventurers, entrepreneurs world-famous for their aggressive, nautical import business, highly leveraged takeovers and blue eyes.
    2. Bloodthirsty sea pirates who ravaged northern Europe beginning in the 9th century.

Hagar's note: The first definition is much preferred; the second is used only by malcontents, the envious, and disgruntled owners of waterfront property.

Fair enough, tankfully it isn't one of those fitted.
