I'm sure we've all seen the XKCD before.

I doubt it's that though. High quality connectors are expensive relative to most of the stuff on a board and at least for ATX/etc. there's no financial incentive to replace the cheap/simple pin headers with something less fussy.

Also not all cases implement all headers, so the current pick-and-mix approach makes at least some sense. Although you could also just not wire those pins on a standardised connector I guess.

    Anyway, video cards.

Newegg (bleh) currently has MSI 6600XT for $250 after promo. Currently still living the 1080p GTX 970 life, but some newer games recommend something better for minimum.

Would that card be good for at least 3-4 years assuming I don't suddenly want to play games at 1440p max settings?

Or longer than that, tbh. 1080/60 is APU territory now.

My monitor can do 1440/165 but most games I own don't benefit much from it.

The problem is also textures. Apparently TLoU PC maxes out beyond 6GB (in 1080p) so at least 8GB is recommended (perhaps even more). Problem is that not a lot of cards have that much VRAM.

Latest gen console ports will use more than 8GB of VRAM very easily, and nVidia especially has been equipping even their enthusiast-class cards with 8GB of vRam despite people saying "hey we're not sure that's going to be enough" for a while now.

Shouldn't have bought those cards then. Nvidia was selling what people were buying. And tbh all we have to go on at the moment are two horribly unoptimized games (Hogwarts and TLOU), everything else still runs absolutely fine in 8GB on most resolutions. That said I think 12GB is the new minimum if you expect to handle high settings in all games for the next few years.

I think the issue is the price that these 8GB cards are being sold for. It's frankly a scam to charge that much for a card with 8GB of RAM. I have my issues with the pricing of the 7900XT but at least it's got loads of VRAM up ins.

Lucky I got the 3080 12GB instead of the 10GB version then.

Yeah in hindsight that was probably one of the best 3000-series cards you could buy. We'll have to see how things turn out in the coming years, maybe 10GB isn't really an issue either, maybe even 12GB isn't enough. There's a lot of FUD around VRAM currently, hard to know for sure how things will pan out.

HUB on the 8GB vs 16Gb for 2023 games https://youtu.be/Rh7kFgHe21k

tl;dw: don't buy an 8GB card now, the games coming out now were mostly developed to run on consoles with 16GB shared RAM, which means about 12-14GB for the GPU.

IMO 12GB is the least you should accept in a new card, even for 1080P now. Mashie's 3080 is fine for now, but anyone spaffing £500 on a new 8GB 4070 is a chump.

Except that it also has 12GB.

12GB is minimally acceptable for a card of that price, but it's still weak.
