Dove landing in a fountain in Rome, iirc the one at Piazza della Repubblica (slightly resized and cropped).

Aperture: f/2.8, ISO: 100, 1/1250s exposure

edit: Two birds, one fountain (EXIFs be in the pic, same as above with slightly faster shutter speed).

Been a very long time lurker on SHC and did not expect a thread like this. Before I would just canvas Eve General and ignore the other sub boards. Heh my mistake. So for my first post on FHC, here are a couple of shots taken yesterday. Got bored, grabbed some kitchen utensils and my camera gear.

A drop - drops controlled via a titrator into a black crockpot insert, 5D MK II on tripod with remote shutter release, flash bounce off of the lid of my laptop (has a red candyshell) and then through a white opaque piece of plastic.


Bowls of Candy - pane of glass propped over a bowl of Skittles. Glass was covered with rain-X to promote beading. Flash through an umbrella off to the side.


Solitary Drop - (taken last year) - flower positioned behind drop and then camera aligned to achieve the refraction - natural light.


Lake Tipsoo - (taken last year) - early morning rise to get the shot. I stayed at Mt. Rainier all night for this shot.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8

I'd have to say it's my favorite lens - I don't normally use it on paid gigs but just for the sheer joy of photography it definitely provides - one of the few lenses that can be used across any avenue - macro/landscape/astronomy - you name it.

Cameras don't make photos. I have seen some great photos from iphones of all things lol. Your photos are really nice - they just need a touch of pop to em to make them jump off the screen.

The following edits were unasked for and if you so state I will immediately remove them. But with a little playing with sliders on basic photo editors you can do some really neat things.

Your first - increased contrast and saturation a bit. Straightened horizon. Vibrancy and curves. Small crop to off-center the chairs and keep those dramatic clouds in the frame


Your last - again contrast and saturation with some added vibrancy and curves. Also threw in a little vignetting to darken the edges and focus the eyes toward the boat dock and trees.


Edit - it's hard to mess around with lower res photos heheh.

Frools - I drooled over the L but couldn't justify the added cost for the hybrid stabilization. If I had a 3rd party macro then I would have but the glass was essentially the same so that kept me with the older version.

yeah probably not worth it at the normal prices but i got it without paying VAT and also -£75 canon cashback offer so only cost like £500
the hybrid IS is pretty nice tho

hopefully with the warmer weather the bugs'll be coming out again, i need some fukken bee macros

Thanks for tips, I am an amateur about camera's apart from the point and click of it all. When you say pop, are you talking post-processing? if so I guess photoshop/gimp or one of a number of packages would suffice?

yes - post processing. Most any 3rd party photography program would do.

Gimp would be the most inexpensive option and a very decent editor tbh.

Photoshop elements would be much better imho than any professional photoshop - not to mention the serious kick in the nutz pricing it has.

If you're a mac user, iphoto is pretty decent in its own right.

Instead of the days you would take film to the developer ((unless your mean and oldschool)) and get back prints, the new photography age has moved the darkroom to the computer and put the load on the photographer.

Anyways keep the photos coming - nothing makes one better than practice.

ya forgot about those two programs lol as I use one exclusively

Lightroom -mac/pc

Aperture - mac - the one I use

Honestly if your just editing a couple of photos here and there, save your cash and just use Gimp

Otherwise either of those two programs are win for photo editing as they are specialized specifically for photography.
