    Wow. That was a battering.
Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves for slaughter.

    Ouch!
I'm not ususally impressed with England - especially in the current light, but goodness me this was quite the performance. It had tanges of England-A chasing down AUS 450 without breaking a sweat.
    Well done B Team. That's a hammering.

I can't imagine why we looked totally unprepared for test cricket - from BBC news:

Zak Crawley has faced six, while Root, Bairstow, Dan Lawrence, Jos Buttler and Sam Curran had not played a single red-ball innings.

The ecb have totally fucked red ball cricket. The test team will be shit for ages now because of that.

But it's ok as they are doing it to bring in the hundred to save cricket, through free to air viewing and free tickets, which was totally impossible for T20 blast.

Apparently it was impossible because of how the tv rights to t20 cricket had been negotiated in the past or something.

England need to find some proper red ball run scorers because they can't rely on Joe root to bail them out all the time.

The T20 Blast rights were negotiated in 2017, when the hundred was being negotiated. The rights expired in 2020 and could be shown on free to air broadcast the ECB chose not to and sold the rights mostly to sky and introduced another competition at the same time they could offer partially free to air, saving cricket from the damage they had done in the negotiations at the same time for the blast.

They wanted too have a T20, a hundred a 50 over competition all running through the best months and relegated proper cricket to April/May and September, this is fine but you won't get red ball scorers by sending the message that all that matters is white ball as its a different skill set and mindset.

Now the thread is getting to the source of the issue with the England team and why cricket in England is dying on its arse.

For once TMS said something accurate about the situation too:
    - "Going off every time it gets dark is going to kill any interest people have in Test Cricket" - MV
    - "They need to burn those light meters" - AZ

They need to find an acceptable level of light/gloom that the red ball is not dangerous in and just have that set as the standard. Cricket is about playing the conditions and I understand safety is a concern but having an arbitrary light figure per test is stupid. Dunno if there's an issue with calibrating light meters which makes this unfeasible but it's very frustrating to watch.

I think a lot of people haven't faced genuinely quick bowling. The fastest I have ever faced is about 80MPH and it involved my stumps spinning some way behind me before I played the forward defensive I thought had it covered - I can understand why people don't want to add bad light to that equation. Instead of worrying about bad light losing a few overs they could actually make over rates count for something - a 5 run penalty for every over under 15 per hour would definitely result in less lost overs (normally 3-5 at least a day for poor over rate). They should also show a bit more flexibility - if the forecast is glorious sun at 6:01 but the cutoff to restart is 6:00 then delay the cutoff until there genuinely isn't any prospect of play.

A lot of facing fast bowling is anticipation, reading the bowler and the skill of withdrawing a shot when you don't want to play. It's crazy how much the timing has to change once pace picks up (and why the slower ball variations are so effective in the shorter formats). The biggest issue with bad light tends to be the ability to pick out the short one. They can still decide an appopriate vision level though and just roll it out universally.

I agree about the over rates, it's been getting ridiculous recently. I'm not sure if 5 runs is an appropriate penalty though. Maybe remove a bowler from the attack if their over rate is too slow? That would be a proper deterrance. And/or have an over clock somewhere.

Well this test is certainly excitingly poised.

England had a bad 40 minutes and now have no real way to win the test.

They've been unbelievably unlucky against this tail though, balls falling just short, finger tip chances etc. They should have just bowled at the stumps.

Having slips rather than four on boundary might have helped.

Both openers gone for ducks, need to work very hard to save this now.
