I use a separate power supply for each component. If you don't do this you are basically wanting to burn down your local neighbourhood
Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves for slaughter.

I would like to report that I am still alive and no fires yet, I can't say if it was or was not the PSU cables I ahve to thank for this. But I'm here.

Now it's Jan payday i'm looking at that sweet sweet CPU upgrade. The Ryzen7 5800X jsut seems too expensive for the small increase in performance against the 5700X which i'm probably going to go for, and maybe throw an extra 16gb of AMD spec memory at the same time. What do you think ?

    mini-edit hold on - 5700X are Zen2? The Ryzen 5 / 5600X is the one i should be getting ?

The 5700x doesn't yet exist, does it? There's lot of rumours and speculation but no confirmed parts AFAIK. In which case you'd be looking at the 3700x which yes, is Zen 2. The 5800x is about 15-30% faster than the 3700x performance wise and 5-15% faster than the 5600x (15% is usually in synthetics and productivity, gaming is where the lower performance increases come in).

The rumours say 5700x is coming first quarter 2021, but that's internet rumours and speculation - take with a pinch of salt. The reality is until Intel finally gets their architecture sorted out and gets some of their 10nm desktop parts to market, AMD can afford to slow play it and hold back things like any theorised 5700x. Now is just a bad time to be doing PC part buying, and I normally don't say that.

    There's a 5700x?

Get the 5800x, they are very close to their MSRP (at least here in Germany).

In my own hardware news, I had another black screen crash with the fans spinning up to 100%. I have a new 850W PSU, two separate cables running to the Vega 64. There are two options discussed on several forums with that type of crash. The first is PSU, which I eliminated as a possible cause. Now comes option two: a faulty card, RMA it. Well ... bought in 2018, out of warranty. Funny enough, this happens more often in DX12, like Civ6.

New card it is after all.

Now comes the problem: I run a b450 board with both m2 slots populated. That reduces the x16 slot to x8.* Which is okay for the Vega as it still provides enough bandwidth (GN analysis 1, analysis 2). I am wondering how that applies to the 3080/3090/6800xt/6900xt

*this was done after I had crashes, so isn't related to the crashes

FANKENOTEDIT: Heh, seems like a lot of people had the same thought. Techpowerup tested the shit out of that question.
    https://www.techpowerup.com/review/n...press-scaling/

1440p is what I am interested in. And this looks ok. The drop isn't crippling. In the tests the bar to look for is red, pcie 3.0 x8 is equal in speed to pcie 2.0 x16.

Now I can contemplate what to get: 6800XT for absurd 1100 (msrp 649), 6900xt for equally absurd 1400 (msrp 999) or a 3090 for 2000 (msrp FE 1500).

    REAL EDIT:

    How much is that over MSRP: 6800xt 69%, 6900xt 40%, 3090 33%; 3080 is not available.

As Zekk said, buying anything right now appears to be pretty brutal. Although you have the blackscreen can you hold out for longer or survive on an older card from somewhere else? Looks like the cpu market has stabalised to a large extent but the gpu market is still shot to shit no matter where you are.

Also, stupid question: were you running the latest drivers? Im bobbling along with an RX 5700 XT and prior to patch 20.11.2 had a lot of issues with stability (which i put down to the OC), but since the update, stability has improved quite a bit (although i get CTD's and occasional freezes as the mem controller is pretty much maxed out, but well ... 1900 F:M:uclk).
Shitting up eve for .... well, longer than most of you scumbags.

Latest drivers and that has been an issue for others over the last couple of years, regardless of drivers and applied to Verga 56s and Vega 64s. The money is not an issue (lockdowns are cheap). I would buy a b550 and 5800 as well if the difference between x8 and x16 was significant.

I went through this choice recently. This is what I came to a conclusion for (and you can see my build a few pages back).

5600 is ~300 for 6x cores. 5800 is ~400 for 8x cores. Its the same price per core, the 5800 came out of the gates very high up the CPU ranking for single threaded performance in stock form. Basically top or top 3 in all graphs I looked at. I had the budget and I felt that going to 8x core was a smart future proof move.

    As an example:
I was playing around with Unreal engine and ray tracing, hit "build" and all cores went to 100%. The PC is still snappy to use and everything worked as if that Unreal build wasnt happening. No frame drops on youtube, no slowdown opening other apps or chrome tabs. I was even running my VM for work just fine. Its a beast! The 59xx must be monsters!

3600X if you'll upgrade again in 2-3 years

5800X if you are building to last 4-5+ years

As Equim says, there's something really nice about using a CPU that has "more cores than you need". I'm still only on a 2700, but I have never felt like I have given it more to do than it can handle. Even if I'm running handbrake or re-endcoding a batch of sound files or whatever, there's always some more resources for whatever else I want to do.

Also if you're buying with , might as well spend them now while they're still worth anything.

As an aside, I love how many years after Intel realising NetBurst was a stupid idea, AND AMD trying their own NetBurst that totally wasn't NetBurst honest guize in the Bulldozer lineup, Intel are basically back to having to do NetBurst (bump power and clock and hope that solves everything else).

I haven't tested this first hand but I'm given to understand that Intel's latest chips run hot AF, and when I'm looking at benches, the 10700k loses to midrange AMD parts even with a heavy overclock, but hey....the boost clock is higher, so bigger number, right?

SO either y'all have no opinion (fat chance) or y'all missed it

    6800xt or 6900xt or 3090? I'd prefer a 3080, but they are unobtainable. It would be powering a 1440p 144Hz screen.

I'm in the exact same position as you with a Vega 64 (Mines not broken though) and I'm just too depressed to comment, there's simply no way I'd pay for any card with the current prices. 3090 and 6900XT are just insanely priced even at msrp and I'd never even consider them in the first place. If I absolutely had to get a card because my current one was broken I'd find a second hand Polaris card or a 1060. The cost for that will be offset twice over once the 3080's and 6800's come down from ludicrous territory.

This. So unfortunately none of your options Joe, although I'm sure that's not the answer you want.

I don't think "difference to rrp" is a good measure of value, and in particular not for the 3090, where the rrp is set to "insane" in order to extort maximum money from fanatics.

If you have to buy a card now, buy the cheapest one.

Fair point. However I'd like to have a card that's gonna last a while and that runs the 1440 144Hz screen at max.

Ray tracing would be a nice addition.

So yeah, 3080 would be the ideal choice. Too bad there are none.

There are ways to get them. Various discords exist that have stock tracker bots that will ping you when they're in stock. You could download a purchase bot (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em, and at least you won't be scalping). Hell you could code one yourself, they're not hard to make and it's a good exercise.
