Problem is even with all the money in the world you can only solve the issues of one or maybe 2 countries, you can pour money into failed states till the cows come home and all you will do is enrich some dictators. So unless you wanna take over the entire planet one cannot simply solve the worlds problems and as corona shows a problem on one side of the planet can and will affect everything.

Does a "fully self sufficient" means that you can manufacture everything human society may ever need to live on Mars, on Mars, by using Martian resources. So by default a Moon base or a space colony can never by fully self sufficient. Or we can say "needs no more imports from Earth that Earth alone can provide" maybe?

How about living conditions, do you consider living in underground complexes self sufficient or you require a fully terraformed Mars?

Depending on how you define "self sufficient" you can have it in two or three centuries or in 100,000 years or never.

But unless you start building infrastructure and economy throughout the Solar System you will never get there. Never.

Good, why go there to live when if you'd ever be able to sustain life on another world without earth it'd have to be in another solar system. Keep being ignorant as you can be though.

When it fell it damaged the dish, tearing a 30-meter gash in it, and also damaged several of the panels making up the Gregorian dome.
